Major Mudd

by Dick Mac

Throughout my childhood, Major Mudd appeared on WNAC-TV, Channel 7, in Boston.

"The Major Mudd Show" starring Major Mudd and His Gang was on television after school, and many kids dreamed of appearing on the show. If I remember correctly, my sister was lucky enough to appear on the show some time around 1967 or 1968.

Ed McDonnell, who portrayed the Major throughout the show's run, was known as a charitable man who made many appearances and helped many people.

Later in life, McDonnell required medical attention that he was unable to afford. A benefit was held, money was raised, and McDonnell became the recipient of charity he so generously gave in the past. He needed a kidney transplant, which he did not ultimately receive, but he was honored by those who cared.

In the Summer of 1967, I was featured in a public service announcement for Summerthing, recorded at the WNAC-TV studios in Kenmore Square. I was very happy when the studio we used housed the set for the Major Mudd Show (although the set did not appear int he commercial). It was glorious to be on that set. I asked the technicians if Major Mudd was around, and they all laughed. I didn't get to meet the Major that night, and never did.

I'd love to hear from people who have memories of Major Mudd.

I was on the major mudd show as a child. I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find old episodes. Ed was an amazing entertainer, and a big part of my childhood.

I was rooting through the net and came across your blog for Major Mudd. I loved the show as a kid. Do you remember what "IBBY" stood for?

I haven't found old episodes. I was also on the show. I was one of the children blowing the horns. The horns were not real, but they didn't tell us that, so it looked like we were really making the sound, but it was a recording! haha! I remember being so frustrated that I would blow and blow and couldn't get any noise to come out of mine!

My father produced and directed Major Mudd, Fantastic Features, Lord Bumblebrook and everything else Ed did at WNAC between late 1961 and June of 1964. I remember the first sketches my father did of a "new" character they were working on... Feep!

Looks like we all had some great memories of this show! I also, was on the show, was picked for one of the games contests, was filmed playing it and won it. I won a ring toss prize! This would be a kick to show my kids now! I wish like everyone else on these posts that we could find those episodes somewhere out there! If you have info, please pass it along! Major Mudd came to the Granada Theater in Malden when I was a kid. One of the kids in the audience asked him to take his helmet off. He said,"Okay". Then he stepped BEHIND the curtain and removed the helmet - sticking it out in front of the curtain. However, we never actually saw him without the helmet - just the helmet! Boy, did that get a big laugh!

I was on Major Mudd twice around the late '60s. The second time I was on, Mudd/McDonnell was amazed that I knew who Ernie Kovacs was(I was around 11, and Kovacs had died about 9 years earlier).Only when I read his obit did I learn that McDonnall had worked with Kovacs!

I invite you all to the Major Mudd Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/majormudd/!

Kathryn, I'm one of Major Mudd's sons. And my whole family is eternally grateful to Uncle Bud for donating his kidney. I remember that the operation was actually a lot harder on Uncle Bud because of the way they had to go in and get the kidney. The new kidney gave my dad a new lease on life for several years. It really made a huge difference!
