At Chrismastime, 1977, I sat in front of a television spell-bound by the godfather of punk singing a carol with the godfather of pablum. I was not the only person that was befuddled by David Bowie's next move in pop culture.
Bowie's love affair with television, as sometimes distant and obtuse as it appears, is enchanting. Whether it's the Dinah Shore show, or the Today Show, or Dick Cavett, or Bing Crosby, Bowie and the camera are lovers as old and affectionate as any others.
