According to the We Are Family Foundation website the new video project has been conceived, funded, and created by a group of subversives such as " . . . the Anti-Defamation League, Crown Theatres, Disney Channel, FedEx, Nickelodeon, HIT Entertainment, Nile Rodgers/Sony Publishing/The Bernard Edwards Estate/Warner Chapel, Nelvana, Scholastic, Sesame Workshop, Toni Mendez Shapiro Estate, and WGBH" who have "come together to produce and distribute this unprecedented children's educational music video and curriculum."
That's a pretty impressive representation of American capitalism and equality.
The project also includes such horrible characters as Arthur, Barney, Bear in the Big Blue House, Between the Lions, Blue's Clues, Bob the Builder, The Book of Pooh, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Dora the Explorer, Jimmy Neutron, JoJo's Circus, Kim Possible, Lilo & Stitch: The Series, Madeline, The Magic School Bus, The Muppet Show, The Proud Family, Rugrats, Sesame Street, SpongeBob SquarePants, Zoom, Bill Cosby, Diana Ross and Whoopi Goldberg, among others.
James C. Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, has come-out against the video. He says it is promoting a homosexual agenda. Dobson is often talking about homosexuals. He talks about homosexuals more than I do, and he talks about homosexuals more than most of the gay men I know.
Dobson denies that he has attacked any of the individuals involved in the production, even though he has vilified SpongeBob SquarePants, and he attempts to take his foot out of his mouth by stating: "But while the video is harmless on its own, I believe the agenda behind it is sinister. My brief comments at the FRC gathering were intended to express concern not about SpongeBob or Big Bird or any of their other cartoon friends, but about the way in which those childhood symbols are apparently being hijacked to promote an agenda that involves teaching homosexual propaganda to children."
WHAT?!?!?! Nobody is teaching school children homosexual propaganda! Teaching tolerance is not the same as teaching homosexuality, or heterosexuality.
In case you have been under a rock for five years, it is now unpatriotic to practice tolerance and acceptance of those different from you. Just ask anyone lost in the heartland and unable to wipe the Jesus from their eyes. They will say how much right-wingers and conservatives have been discriminated against by liberals and they will talk about returning America to a better time.
This remark always confuses me. When was this "better time"? Maybe it was before civil rights, or before WWII, or before women could vote, or before labor unions. Maybe all the way back to slavery would be best in this search for a simpler time in American history.
The current majority seems to be saying there is now only one way to think if you want to be a true American: as a fundamentalist. Any other analysis or position is unacceptable and unpatriotic.
Oh, sorry, there is no more analysis. Analysis is subversive, unchristian and unpatriotic: just do what the television tells you to do and quit your complaining! (But, pretend that you are thinking on your own and pretend that the media is controlled by liberals.)
Dobson's agenda, however, is to pretend that sexuality doesn't exist at all, that we all descend from Eve (who wrecked paradise), and no decent human being has sex, except to procreate.
It seems that even parents in this cowardly new world are avoiding the issue of sexuality. If the government finds out you are teaching your children about AIDS, sexuality, birth control or gender roles, they might remove them from your home.
What the so-called christians don't want to talk about is the dramatic increase in teenage abortions since the beginning of the Bush II regime. They want to ignore this fact and tell parents that all the problems are because of diversity and homosexuality.
In case you don't know it: more abortions take place during so-called conservative regimes than during so-called liberal regimes. I suspect this is rooted in economics and not morality. Under wrong-wingers the economy always goes to pot and people can't afford to have children; under liberals the economy always flourishes and people feel confident to procreate because they will be able to feed their families.
Back to Mr. Dobson!
I have worked on the homosexual agenda in my adult life. I have never seen school children on the agenda. One look at the homosexual agenda would show you that there is NO TIME for school children. Homosexuals are trying to prevent total workplace and housing discrimination, the spread of AIDS, a rising suicide rate among homosexual teenagers, and the right to form legal unions. There is no time to subvert the minds of school children.
The only Americans I know who are subverting the minds and education of America's youth is the christian-right. They want to insist that science is wrong and dogma is correct. That equality is subversive and a free-market is god-given. They want to teach that ten percent of the population is going to hell because the bible says so, but they don't want to teach children how to love, honor and respect themselves and others. The christian-right agenda is subversive!
James Dobson and his lying jesus-freak friends are constantly using homosexuality as a means to frighten Americans, and collect donations to halt the homosexual agenda.
Fortunately, there ARE Christians who use their God-given brains to do the work of, and carry the message of Jesus Christ to all Americans. Their agenda includes horrible things like social justice! Oh, sweet jeezuz, don't say that! Yes, plain old social justice.
The United Church of Christ has begun a wonderful campaign to counteract the stupidity put forth by the liars at Focus on the Family. In a wonderful little publicity move, the UCC has extended an unequivocal welcome to SpongeBob, because "Jesus didn't turn people away." Many Christians, probably the majority of Christians, are welcoming, loving people who help build strong communities and teach their children the American ways of equality and social justice, while teaching the lessons of love and openness from the stories of Jesus.
I applaud the UCC. You can read about their recent campaign of love and tolerance here.
